Connecting Communities, Conservation, and Sharks in the Western Indian Ocean
Along Kenya’s coastline, sharks are both present and increasingly absent—still appearing in fisheries landings, yet rarely seen in scientific surveys. Across the Western Indian Ocean, shark populations face mounting pressures from overfishing, habitat degradation, and climate change, highlighting urgent conservation challenges and critical data gaps. In response, SharkLine was founded to connect science, policy, education, and community knowledge in support of shark conservation. By working closely with coastal communities, researchers, and practitioners, the initiative bridges the gap between knowledge and action, promoting inclusive, evidence-based approaches that benefit both marine ecosystems and the people who depend on them. More than a conservation initiative, SharkLine is building a collaborative movement for the future of sharks, coastal livelihoods, and healthy oceans across the Western Indian Ocean.
